International Labour Day, held on May 1 every year, has its roots in the Haymarket Affair that took place in Chicago in 1886. Thousands of workers across the country had gone on strike during the spring of 1886 to demand an eight-hour workday. But the protests reached a critical stage on May 4 at Haymarket Square when protests between labor activists and police turned violent. A year later, the Second International Congress, an umbrella group of socialist parties and trade unions, decided to commemorate May 1 as International Labor Day in solidarity with the so-called martyrs of the Chicago labor rights movement.
