The Milky Way galaxy itself appears to be a barred spiral galaxy because it contains a flattish disk with spiral arms extending outward from a central bar-shaped bulge of stars and matter, like a giant pinwheel with a bar in the middle from which the spiral arms originate. Our solar system is located in the Orion Arm, midway between the center and the edge of the galaxy.
