What does the term “Holocaust” mean?

In addition to the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews by Nazi Germany and its allies during World War II, the Holocaust also includes the targeting and murder of millions of other groups, such as Roma, Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, and individuals with disabilities. The word, which means "burnt offering" in Greek, was adopted to refer to this particular genocide, which the Nazis used as a euphemism and which is frequently referred to as the "Shoah" (catastrophic destruction) in Hebrew.
