Nitrous oxide, the chemical compound behind "laughing gas," is represented with the formula N2O. It is a non-flammable, colorless gas with a sweetish odor and taste. What is interesting to note is that, although it was not until 1772 that it was first discovered, it was not until the early 1800s that it found new use among the British elite, in "laughing gas parties" for entertainment purposes. It was not until 1844 that it found new use in medicine, when a man under the influence of it injured his leg but did not feel it, leading to the conclusion that it could be used to numb pain in dental work
