The African National Congress (ANC) was banned in South Africa on April 8, 1960. The apartheid government declared the ANC an "unlawful organization" following the Sharpeville Massacre. The banning of the ANC forced the organization to operate underground and in exile for thirty years until it was unbanned in February 1990.
