Hemant Karkare, a 1982-batch IPS officer, was leading the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad and made the ultimate sacrifice on 26 November 2008 during the Mumbai attacks, when he was killed while chasing terrorists near Cama Hospital. Prior to his death, he was associated with the RAW and handled key investigations, including the 2008 Malegaon blast case. He was conferred the Ashoka Chakra, which is the country’s highest peace-time gallantry award, in recognition of his act of bravery.
