The borders of Pakistan are adjacent to four different countries: the People’s Republic of China, Afghanistan, India, and Iran. On the other hand, the country of Tajikistan is located on the other side of a narrow strip of land referred to as the "Wakhan Corridor". This narrow strip of territory in northeastern Afghanistan—ranging from 13 to 65 kilometers in width—separates the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan to the north from the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan to the south. It was established in the late 19th century as a buffer zone between the Russian and British empires.
