It is strongly associated with Princess Zebunnisa, also known as Zeb-un-Nissa, who was the eldest and most talented daughter of the sixth Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. Princess Zebunnisa was renowned as a poet, scholar, and calligrapher. She wrote poetry under the pseudonym "Makhfi."
Historians have suggested that the inscription on the gateway could be referring to her aunt, Jahanara Begum, who was the daughter of Shah Jahan. But the most widely accepted version of history is that the garden was patronized by Princess Zebunnisa.
