Who compiled the first English dictionary?

  • (A) Robert Cawdrey
  • (B) Samuel Johnson
  • (C) John Bullokar
  • (D) Hennery Cockeram
  • Back in 1604, Robert Cawdrey, a teacher and clergyman from England, made the first English dictionary that was in ABC order. Called A Table Alphabeticall, it wasn't very big, with only about 2,543 words. He wrote simple, short definitions, usually just one word, to help people who weren't good with fancy words understand tricky English words that came from other languages.
  • Now, lots of people think Samuel Johnson wrote the first English dictionary. He did write a really important one called A Dictionary of the English Language, but it came out way later in 1755. Johnson's dictionary was the first to be super thorough and organized with quotes from books, but plenty of other dictionaries came before his.
