Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit came up with the mercury-in-glass thermometer back in 1714. Earlier, in 1709, he crafted alcohol thermometers, and even before that, Galileo had created a thermoscope. Moreover, Fahrenheit introduced a temperature scale named after him. This scale continues to be used widely today.
