Hazrat Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (R.A), a companion of the Prophet, lies at rest in Istanbul's Eyüp district in Turkey. He took part in the first Muslim siege of Constantinople, which is now called Istanbul, between 674 and 678 AD. During this time, he became ill and asked for his body to be taken as far into enemy land as possible and buried near the city's walls. When the Ottomans captured the city in 1453, his burial site was found again. In recognition of his legacy, they constructed the Eyüp Sultan Mosque and a tomb complex at that location.
