The mean of 5 numbers is 34. Three of the numbers are 29, 26 and 35. If the remaining two numbers are in the ratio 1:3, find the numbers?

  • Solution: Total sum of 5 numbers = 5 × 34 = 170
  • Sum of the three numbers (given) = 29 + 26 + 35 = 90
  • So, the sum of the remaining two numbers = 170 - 90 = 80
  • Let the two numbers be in ratio 1:3 → x and 3x
  • Then x + 3x = 80 ⇒ 4x = 80 ⇒ x = 20
  • So the numbers are 20 and 60
