Pakistan’s first nuclear power plant, KANUPP-1, was officially completed and inaugurated on November 28, 1972, by President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Construction of the 137 MW CANDU-type reactor began in August 1966 with support from Canada, and it reached first criticality on August 1, 1971. Although it was connected to the grid on October 18, 1971, it attained full power operation in October 1972 before its formal commissioning later that year. The plant supplied electricity to the Karachi region for nearly 50 years before being decommissioned on August 1, 2021.
