Abu Ubaidah (R.A) wanted to avoid fighting him at first. However, his father kept pursuing him aggressively and blocked his way. Eventually, Abu Ubaidah had no choice but to strike and kill him. Many scholars think that Quranic verse 58:22 was revealed because of this event. It speaks about believers not having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they are close family members like their fathers.
