The Federal Shariat Court of Pakistan was established on 26 May 1980, under Presidential Order No. 1 of 1980 and was incorporated in the 1973 Constitution. It was to review the laws to be in conformity with the 'injunctions of Islam as laid down in the Holy Quran and Sunnah'. This set up an independent court for the first time away from the earlier Shariat Benches in the High Courts and committed to the task of Islamization of the legal system of Pakistan.
