The discovery of New Zealand is ascribed to Abel Tasman, who achieved this in 1642. While voyaging for the Dutch East India Company, Abel Tasman first spotted the South Island in New Zealand on December 13, 1642, and named it Staten Landt. Earlier, on November 24, 1642, Tasman discovered what eventually came to be called Tasmania, which he referred to as Van Diemen’s Land.
