The Asia-Europe Meeting, or ASEM, began with a proposal from the then prime minister of Singapore, Goh Chok Tong. In 1994, he planted the seed for a forum that would increase dialogue between Asia and Europe, and it was observed that the relationship within the region was actually stronger across the Atlantic and Pacific. The first summit of ASEM took place in March 1996 in Bangkok, Thailand.
