The Cripps Mission was a disastrous attempt by the British government in March 1942 to obtain Indian support for the World War II effort. Sir Stafford Cripps led the team to visit India offering India Dominion status and the right to make its constitution after the war, but any province that wished to remain outside the new union could do so. Nevertheless, Indian leaders turned down the offer; the Indian National Congress wanted self-rule immediately and a united India, whereas the Muslim League thought the scheme was insufficient to the extent of creating a separate state.
