The Faraizi Movement started in pointing to Bengal (mainly East Bengal) in 1818 and was established by Haji Shariatullah. Initially, it was a religious reform initiative to eliminate the un-Islamic practices and stress on the Faraiz (Islamic obligatory duties), however, it turned into a socio-economic battle. With the guidance of Shariatullah's son, Dudu Miyan, the movement emerged as the strong voice of the downtrodden peasants, rightly proclaiming "land is God's creation" and leading the peasants in the fight not only against exploitative British indigo planters but also against local landlords.
