The atmosphere of the Sun consists of three layers, one upon the other, from the inside out: the photosphere, which is the visible surface of the Sun and from which light escapes into space; the chromosphere, which lies above the photosphere and can be seen as a red glow around the Sun during a total solar eclipse; and finally, the corona, which is the outermost part of the atmosphere and extends far beyond the visible disk of the Sun, sometimes reaching temperatures of over a million degrees Celsius.
