Generally referred to as the Charter of Medina or the Constitution of Medina, the document was authored by Prophet Muhammad in 622 CE (1 A.H.), shortly after he settled in Medina. The document was essentially an agreement between the Muslim community and the various tribes of Medina, including the Jews, Arabs, and many others. This marked the formation of one of the earliest inter-religious cities in the world. This document is recognized by many renowned historians, including Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah, as the earliest constitution in the history of mankind, preceding the Magna Carta by centuries and the US Constitution by more than one thousand years.
