Oceans cover how much of the Earth’s surface?

The oceans cover approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface, hence the Blue Planet nickname for our Earth. The massive ocean covers an area of about 361 million square kilometers (139 million square miles) and contains approximately 97% of the total water on Earth. The other 29% is landmass, consisting of continents and islands. However, the oceans are not just the surface; they are the “spine” of the Earth’s hydrosphere and support the “water world” that holds almost 99% of the Earth’s living space.
