The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was formed as a result of the First Islamic Summit Conference, which was held in Rabat, Morocco, from September 22 to 25, 1969. What actually led to its formation was the international outcry following an arson attack on the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem on August 21, 1969. Although carried out by an Australian extremist, it served as a turning point for Muslim-majority countries to protect Islamic holy sites and increase a sense of unity among themselves.
