The Kurds are often considered the largest ethnic people in the world without their own independent nation. They number around 30 to 40 million people, living almost entirely within a continuous area covering parts of southeastern Turkey, northern Iraq, northeastern Iran, and northern Syria-the so-called Kurdistan area. They have a distinct language and culture and a robust sense of national identity, but they have largely been divided between these states. There is some amount of autonomy, especially with the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq, but as of yet, there is not a fully sovereign country of their own.
