Pakistan began its nuclear power program by establishing the first nuclear power plant, the KANUPP-1 (Karachi Nuclear Power Plant), with the help of the Canadians. A "turnkey" contract was signed with the Canadian General Electric company in May 1965. The 137 MWe pressurized heavy water reactor was completed in 1971 and began operation in 1972.
