Petra is an ancient city excavated out of the red sandstone rocks. It was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom during the 4th century BCE. Petra is known for its buildings such as the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) and its intricate tombs and temples. Petra is situated in Southern Jordan, in a desert valley with mountains on all sides. Petra was selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007 because of its historical and cultural importance.
