The Shimla Agreement was a landmark peace treaty signed on 2 July 1972 by Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistani President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto following the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Instead of blaming each other, they chose talks over threats, promising to settle arguments face to face. Peace would have to come from within, not handed down by outsiders. A shaky border drawn months earlier became fixed - not quite a boundary, more like an unspoken rule both sides agreed to follow. Soldiers captured during fighting were sent home, nearly everyone returned. Talks about Kashmir stayed open, though progress often stalled. Years later, fresh clashes showed how fragile such promises could be. Even with paper proof of intent, trust remained thin between them.
