The "Movement of the Deprived" was founded by Imam Musa al-Sadr in 1974. Its military wing, known as the "Lebanese Resistance Regiments," but more commonly referred to by its Arabic acronym Amal, was formed just a year later, on January 20, 1975, when Lebanon was on the brink of civil war, with which it would soon be engulfed. It was founded together with Hussein el-Husseini.
