The ancestry of Zinedine Zidane leads all the way back to Algeria. He was born on June 23, 1972, in the French city of Marseille. His parents, who had settled from North Africa, from the Kabylie area of northern Algeria, since 1953, gave him Algerian Kabyle Berber ancestry. There is no doubting the pride in which Zidane speaks of his origins: "a Kabyle from La Castellane, then an Algerian from Marseille, then a Frenchman."
