The 1983-1985 period saw Ethiopia face its worst famine in recent history. The number of casualties is estimated to vary widely, ranging from 300,000 to more than a million. The total number of those affected was about 7.75 million, with 2.5 million displaced within the country and about 400,000 fleeing the nation. Although a severe drought was the initial cause of the disaster, it was further compounded by civil strife and government actions.
