The initial division between North Korea and South Korea is established by the 38th parallel north. This division was chosen in August 1945 by U.S. military planners as a temporary division after Japan’s surrender in WWII. Although the actual division is currently the Demilitarized Zone established by the 1953 Armistice Agreement and does not coincide with the 38th parallel north, it does follow it and is referred to by the same name.
