On December 17, 2010, Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in the Tunisian town of Sidi Bouzid after the authorities confiscated his vegetable cart, humiliating him in the process. This desperate cry for freedom against corruption and harassment by the police lit the touchpaper of protests that soon swept across Tunisia as a whole. The protests led to the fall of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on January 14, 2011, and became the catalyst for the Arab Spring.
