To which country did Christopher Columbus belong?

Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer who was born around 1451, is believed to have been of Genoese descent, but he actually sailed under the Spanish flags of Ferdinand and Isabella when he explored America. There are, however, claims and theories indicating his possible Spanish origin, as well as possible Jewish origin, though everyone agrees on his possible origins as being Genoese.
