U Thant (1909-1974) was a Burmese diplomat who served as the third Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1961 to 1971. He made history as the first non-Western and Asian Secretary-General of the UN. Before his appointment as the Secretary-General, he was the Permanent Representative of Burma to the UN with the rank of Ambassador from 1957 to 1961. Burma, his country of origin, is now officially known as Myanmar.
