During the British Raj period, Gulab Singh ruled Jammu and Kashmir. He took over as the first Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir in 1846, following the Treaty of Amritsar, when the British sold the territory to him in the aftermath of the First Anglo-Sikh War.
