  • Before embracing Islam, he was called 'Abd al-Shams (Servant of the Sun) or, according to some reports, 'Abd Ghanm'.
  • He belonged to the Banu Daws clan of the Zahran tribe in Arabia. When he embraced Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) renamed him 'Abd al-Raḥmān (Servant of the Most Merciful).
  • He was given the nickname "Abu Huraira" (literally "Father of the Kitten") by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) because he was very fond of cats and often carried a small kitten in his sleeve.
