The actual name of Sultan Sher Shah Suri was Farid Khan, also known as Farid al-Din Khan. He was born in the late 1400s (1472-1486) in India, Sasaram (in modern-day Bihar, India). He belonged to the Pashtun Sur tribe. His skills with a tiger gave him the nickname "Sher Khan," and when he gained power in North India in 1540, he gave himself the royal name "Sher Shah."
