In Islamabad the well-known Faisal mosque was finally finished and inaugurated in 1986. It started being constructed in 1976 following an international competition that saw a design by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay being chosen. Though the earliest official congregational prayers did take place in June 1988, the year 1986 is remembered as the year when the structure was completed and the then world largest mosque was completed.
