White blood cells, also known as leukocytes, are key players of the immune system. They protect the body against disease-causing organisms by finding, combating, and destroying disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Some white blood cells, called B-lymphocytes, produce antibodies, which attach themselves to specific disease-causing organisms, whereas other white blood cells, called neutrophils and monocytes, are scavenger cells that engulf and destroy disease-causing organisms.
