- The history and archives of past events clearly prove that Bahawalpur was the first princely state that formally joined the Dominion of Pakistan. On 3rd October 1947, Nawab Sadiq Mohammad Khan V signed the Instrument of Accession, and on 9th October 1947, it was accepted by Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
- However, Kalat remained independent until it signed the Instrument of Accession on March 27, 1948.
- Khairpur joined on October 3, 1947—the same date as Bahawalpur. However, Bahawalpur is widely celebrated in history and schoolbooks as the “first” state to join Pakistan because of the Nawab’s proactive and generous financial support of the new Pakistani government.
- The accession of Hunza was a bit delayed as the Mir of Hunza sent a telegram on November 3, 1947, stating his intention to join Pakistan. However, formal accession was signed on November 18, 1947.
