The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is unique in that it is the only organization within the UN to have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize twice. In 1954, the award was given in recognition of its efforts to assist and protect refugees in Europe following World War II. In 1981, the prize was awarded in recognition of its efforts to address refugee crises around the world, from Asia to Africa to Latin America.
