The UNIX operating system was first conceived back in 1969 at the Bell Labs, which is a part of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, or the AT&T for short. The two principal designers of the UNIX system are Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, although other researchers such as Douglas McIlroy and Joe Ossanna also played an important part in the development of the system. UNIX was designed to be a multitasker that could support multiple users. It became the first portable operating system when it was rewritten in the C programming language.
