Karl von Drais, a German baron and inventor, is commonly known as the "father of the bicycle". In 1817, he invented the Laufmaschine, or Draisine, which is widely recognized as the first two-wheeled, steerable, human-powered machine. The Laufmaschine did not have pedals. It was powered by its riders, who pushed the machine with their feet to make it move.
