Lord Ripon is honored with the title of "Father of Local Self-Government in India" due to his introduction of the Local Board Act in 1882. He was the Viceroy of India from 1880 to 1884 and is hailed as the Father of Local Self-Government in India because of his historic Resolution of 1882. This resolution established local boards and municipal bodies in the country as well as the cities, giving Indians their first taste of democracy and financial decentralization. Although many individuals have made notable contributions to the history of India, their contribution was of a different kind.
