During Jahangir’s reign Sir Thomas Roe and Captain Hawking visited Mughal Court to secure:

  • During Jahangir’s rule, the British dispatched two envoys to India with the objective of gaining Commercial Privileges for the EIC. Captain William Hawkins and Sir Thomas Roe were the two British officials. Captain Hawkins remained in the Mughal capital from 1608 to 1611. In 1609, he approached Jahangir with the objective of gaining the emperor’s patronage and permission to establish English factories in India, particularly at Surat. Although he succeeded in gaining the emperor’s personal patronage and came to be known as the "English Khan," he failed to secure a commercial treaty with Jahangir. The reason for this failure was the opposition offered by the Portuguese.
  • Quick Info: Sir Thomas Roe, as the official ambassador of King James I of England from 1615 to 1619, succeeded in gaining a royal farman for the English to trade and establish factories in important Mughal territories like Agra, Ahmedabad, Broach, etc.
