Captain William Hawkins and Sir Thomas Roe were the two British officials. Captain Hawkins remained in the Mughal capital from 1608 to 1611. In 1609, he approached Jahangir with the objective of gaining the emperor’s patronage and permission to establish English factories in India, particularly at Surat. Although he succeeded in gaining the emperor’s personal patronage and came to be known as the "English Khan," he failed to secure a commercial treaty with Jahangir. The reason for this failure was the opposition offered by the Portuguese.
